Stop Minor Back Pain From Getting Worse with These Tips

Minor back pain is one of the most common experiences a person can face. It can be caused by an injury, strain from overexertion, or even excess amounts of stress. When a bout of minor back pain strikes, it’s best to already have an action plan ready to go so you can nip the problem in the bud before it escalates into something worse. Unfortunately, many people choose to completely ignore back pain, hoping it will somehow go away on its own. Even though this can happen, it’s a safer bet to address it right away. Taking care of a small health issue immediately is much better than inevitably having to go through the hassle of taking care of a bigger issue later on.

Rest, But Not Too Much

It’s a common misconception that the best thing to do when back pain strikes is to stop everything and confine yourself to bedrest for at least a day or two. You certainly don’t want to be running any marathons as you heal from back pain, but completely halting all physical activity is a great way to increase inflammation and stiffness in your joints and the surrounding soft tissues. This can greatly prolong the recovery process and make it harder to move past the issue, so be sure to continue moving around and even taking short walks during the day, as long as it doesn’t cause you any pain.

Ice and Heat Therapy are Your Friends

Every household should have an ice pack and a heat pack, especially for the inevitable bout of back pain. Place ice on the affected area as soon as possible to reduce swelling and inflammation, and to numb the area for reduced discomfort. After this, switch to using a heat pack. Heat will relax the blood vessels and encourage greater blood flow to the area, which can help speed up the healing process and reduce the amount of discomfort you feel over time. Switch between these two methods at 15-minute intervals; over the next few days, you should notice an improvement in your condition.

Meet with healthcare professionals for further advice

If your back pain is causing you considerable discomfort or becomes debilitating, definitely see your doctor right away for stronger treatment options.
