Which Came First, The Depression Or The Diabetes?

sadCould facing depression now increase your risk for falling ill to diabetes later? Or could contracting diabetes raise your risk for depression? According to a study published in the journal Diabetes Care, the answer is YES.

The Study

Researchers examined 20 studies in an attempt to understand what happens first when people suffer from both depression and type 2 diabetes (which is a surprisingly common combination). Thirteen of the studies evaluated depression as a precursor to diabetes, while the other seven studies looked at the possibility of diabetes causing depression. The researchers found that people with depression have a 60 percent raised risk of developing diabetes than people without depression, while the chances of getting depression are 15 percent higher in those who’ve already developed diabetes.


Further evidence indicates that being depressed affects both your mental health and your physical health– and it can often lead to diabetes and other chronic health problems.

Check out a few ways you can steer clear of the frightening diabetes/depression combination:

Walk A Lot

Simply walking quickly for 17 minutes each day decreases symptoms of depression by a respectable 17 percent, studies have consistently shown. Furthermore, doing so for a half hour each day decreases your chances of developing type 2 diabetes by a whopping 30 percent.

Get In The Shower, And Get It Cold

Taking a two- to three- minute morning shower in water that is 68 degrees could help you avoid depression, says one recent study. It could even serve as a kind of electroshock therapy, causing your brain to elicit antidepressant chemicals.

Sleep Soundly

Don’t let electronics take you from a good sleep. In general, you need between seven and eight hours of sleep each night to abstain from both depression and diabetes. Artificial lights from electronic screens trick your brain into thinking it needs to stay awake– so cut out the technology a full hour before bedtime so you can begin properly settling down for your sleep.
