Better Lunch = Better Paycheck: How Your Lunch Affects Your Work

Want a pat on the back from the boss this year? Or perhaps you would like a raise or promotion. The answer to better work success could be in your lunch.

A healthy lunch can lead to a bigger payday. Why? Simply because a healthy lunch can fuel you properly, allowing you to work better. A study shows that, “Employees who eat healthy all day long were 25% more likely to have higher job performance”, as well as “Overall, absenteeism was 27% lower for those workers who ate healthy and regularly exercised and that their job performance was 11% higher than their peers who were obese”.

While the study isn’t being discriminatory of overweight workers versus fit ones, it does prove that “we are what we eat”. Overweight individuals who ate healthy all day long would simply perform better in their jobs, while experiencing more energy and brainpower. Similarly, a fit athlete could have McDonalds for lunch and perform sluggish the rest of the day at the office. It is not about the number on the scale, but the ingredients of your lunch pail.

So how can you change your lunch to positively affect your job performance? The first step is to cut out all fast food. Even the innocent looking chicken sandwich can be full of bad fats and calories that will slow you down.

It is better to set yourself up to eat a light but filling lunch and 1-2 snacks while you are at work. You don’t want to think about your hunger in the middle of a meeting, but you also don’t want to be uncomfortable from eating too much.

Instead, stick to healthy proteins, fats, and fresh fruits and vegetables. If you include carbs in your meal, keep the portion small. Indulging in too many of the wrong carbohydrates at lunch can mess with your blood sugar levels and make you feel more sluggish. Opt for an energy-boosting smoothie or grilled chicken and vegetables. Keep healthy snacks, like almonds or a hardboiled egg close to keep you going strong until you go home. Finally, don’t think about heading to the break room for the extra cup of coffee. Keep yourself hydrated with water and sip on green tea or chamomile tea.

Make the work place work for you by eating the right kind of lunch. You will be surprised how much better eating healthy makes you feel throughout the day. And if you need to buy a smaller suit at the end of the year, even better!
