Posture has always been somewhat of an issue for us, given the unique position our spines are in correlation to the rest of the body that it needs to support. Posture has grown into a much greater concern today as a result of new habits brought on by a typical lifestyle of relying on technology and sedentary behavior.
We spend quite a lot of our time sitting down throughout the day, but more specifically, we find ourselves hunched over a desk staring at a computer screen for hours on end, or we tilt our necks sharply downward as we catch up on some emails on our smartphones. These are just some of the reasons why so many of us suffer from poor posture, and as a result, many health issues can occur. Back and neck pain are two of the most common complaints that arise from poor posture, yet other issues such as a less positive outlook on life and even unhealthy bloodpressure levels can come about when poor posture is left untreated. Fortunately, there are a few quick and simple tips that we can turn to for a helpful reminder on how to keep our posture correct and balanced for better back and spinal health.
The next time you catch yourself hunched over at a desk or even while standing, remember to roll your shoulders back. Imagine a pencil is in between your shoulder blades, and you must prevent it from falling. It may also help you to imagine a string is coming out from the top of your head, parallel to your spinal column, and is pulling you gently up towards the sky or ceiling.
A quick way to check your posture is to notice your palms; if they are at your side and facing your thighs, your posture is good. If your palms are facing outward or inward too much, you know you need to adjust your shoulders.
