Four Foods and Drinks That Make You Dehydrated

water drop medleyNow that it is hotter than ever, your body requires more water. While eight glasses of water a day may have been right for your body in the winter time, it might not be enough now. This is especially true if you have any of these five items in your diet.

  1. Alcohol: While an ice cold beer may sound refreshing, it actually isn’t. Alcohol causes cells to shrink, and squeezes extra water from them. This is also the reason behind the horrible headache you experience the morning after drinking too much.
  2. Caffeine: Caffeine is not as bad for you as alcohol, but since it works as a natural diuretic, it can dehydrate your body. Before reaching for that extra cup of coffee in the afternoon for an energy boost, try a glass of water first. Your fatigue may be from thirst, not lack of coffee.
  3. Protein: High-protein diets are very popular right now. While more protein can help you lean up, it can also use more water. You don’t have to quit your high-protein diet, but you do need to consider drinking more water.
  4. Asparagus: Sounds strange, but asparagus has an amino acid called asparagine, which has you going to the bathroom more. It is very unlikely that asparagus will dehydrate you, but you may want to drink a little bit more water if you are going to have it for dinner.

Eight glasses of water is just not going to cut it in the summer, especially if any of these four items are a regular part of your diet. These four items act as diuretics to the body and can dehydrate the body if you don’t balance them out with more water. Aim to drink three liters a day of plain, filtered water. Of course, it is possible to drink too much water, but majority of Americans are nowhere near the risk of being over hydrated, so drink up!
