When you think about the health benefits of chiropractic care, I’m sure the first things that come to mind are back pain, neck pain, and joint pain. Yes, chiropractic care has been shown time and time again to be a super effective and completely natural method for treating these health conditions and issues, but it turns out that chiropractic treatment methods can be used to treat a wide variety of other harmful health conditions as well, as I learned from an informative post by Your Health Journal.
In particular, I have learned that the adjustments and other techniques used by doctors of chiropractic in a session have the ability to correct sleeping problems, treat sleeping issues such as insomnia, and improve the quality and quantity of a patient’s sleep overall, regardless of any other health conditions they may be dealing with at any given time. Chiropractic is a natural treatment method that focuses on holistic health and healing, so it essentially works to improve the overall health and function of the body so that it can improve and heal itself over time, without the aid of foreign substances such as drugs or medications. In order to understand how and why chiropractic can improve sleep issues in patients, it is first important to understand what goes on in a typical session of chiropractic treatment. During a session, a licensed doctor of chiropractic will gently examine the spinal column for any misalignments, which are known in the medical community as subluxations. These subluxations can be caused by injuries, falls, or natural wear and tear over time.
The chiropractor will then use manual manipulation and apply pressure to certain areas of the spinal column in order to coax it back into its proper position. This leads to a reduction of any back or joint pain that the patient may be experiencing, as we already established, but these manipulations do even more for the body as a whole as well. A subluxation causes blockages and interference within the central nervous system, which makes communication between the body and the brain interrupted. Correcting a subluxation allows communication to be restored, which encourages the healthy functioning of melatonin and the circadian rhythm, for example, which is responsible for regulating sleep patterns. Chiropractic manipulations also reduce levels of cortisol in the body, which is a good thing considering cortisol can also disrupt the sleep-wake cycle.
