Choosing the Best Option: Chiropractic Care vs Medication

An aching back is an ailment that no one wants to live with. Not only does it cause a bit of pressure and pain, but because of the frequency with which we use these areas of the body, pain in either spot can cause significant problems in everyday life. Completing tasks and performing basic activities becomes difficult. While there are numerous treatment options available, it can be tough to know which is best for you. Here, we look at two of the most famous options available, and determine which is best for long term health and wellness.

For many people, medication seems like the most obvious and fastest treatment option. Just like any other ailment, medication is the answer, right? For pain that occurs along the spine, this may or may not be the case. For starters, what does medication do? Generally, pain medication reduces inflammation and blocks pain from the body. Is this effective? Most of the time, yes. In the short term, medication can limit the pain and make activities easier. So, what’s the downside? There are two negative aspects of medication that may give you pause before using. First, your body may build up a tolerance for this medication, resulting in either ineffectiveness or you needing higher doses in order to have the same effect. Secondly, pain medication treats the symptom, but not necessarily the cause. Pain is always a symptom of something else happening in the body. While medication can ease this symptom, it will do little to cure the underlying cause behind it, so there is little hope of being completely pain free for any length of time.

Chiropractic Care

Another popular form of care for those suffering from backaches or other spinal problems is chiropractic care. More and more people are finding this technique to be extremely beneficial in treating back pain. First, it’s important to understand the role of a chiropractor. A chiropractor uses spinal manipulation to align the spine properly. Through injury, accident, or just normal wear and tear of life, the spine can become misaligned. This often results in an achy back and other negative symptoms. When the spine is aligned properly again, it can eliminate these symptoms. In essence, chiropractic care can go after the cause, and subsequently reduce the symptoms. For many, this means long term relief instead of short term relief. So, what’s the downside? Since chiropractic care is seen to be both safe and effective, there is little downside associated with this form of care. For some, it may take more than one session to see long term relief. This might mean a little bit longer suffering, but greater results in the end.

So, Which Is Right For Me?

The truth is that only you and a trusted healthcare provider can determine the best course of action for you and your particular ailment. It’s important to ask questions and find the best option. With so much research pointing to the effectiveness of chiropractic care, don’t be afraid to question your doctor. While medication certainly has its place, it may or may not be the right answer for you.
